Practical guides for Audit Preparation, Compliance & Ongoing Staff Training

Practical Guide for Dental Staff — Audit Preparation, Compliance & Ongoing Staff Training.

Standard · AS 5369:2023

Support, not certificationBiodegree supports your compliance — it does not certify your practice. Meeting AS 5369 remains the responsibility of the practice and its compliance adviser.

How the guides are used

practicalguides.

These practical guides bring together the key requirements, practical procedures and Alpro product applications so that staff know not only what the requirements are, but also how to put them into practice every day.

Use them for

  • Before an audit — As a practical checklist of what staff need to know, do and be able to demonstrate during an audit.
  • For regular staff training — As a reference during in-office training sessions and staff meetings.
  • As an ongoing practice reminder — To reinforce correct procedures, product application, documentation and infection-control routines.
  • For onboarding new staff — To provide a clear and practical introduction to the practice's procedures and the correct use of Alpro products.

3 major parties covering compliance in Australia

who setsthe rules.

01 · Compliance party

AS 5369 Compliance & Regulation

AS 5369:2023 is the official Australian Standard for cleaning, disinfecting and sterilising reusable medical devices. It regulates safe and effective reprocessing of reusable medical devices and other reusable items in healthcare.

It tells dental and healthcare practices how to clean, disinfect, sterilise, store and handle reusable instruments and equipment safely, including requirements for procedures, staff training, equipment and documentation. It ensures reusable dental instruments and equipment are reprocessed correctly and safely between patients.

While the standard is published by Standards Australia, compliance and clinical enforcement are governed by the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care (ACSQHC).

ACSQHC — transitioning to AS 5369:2023
  • Disinfectants and sterilisers used on medical equipment must be explicitly registered with the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) as Class IIb Medical Devices. Standard “Hospital Grade” hard-surface disinfectants do not meet this requirement for medical equipment.
  • Reprocessing workflows should strictly adhere to national infection-control frameworks and the Australian Dental Association (ADA) Guidelines.

TGA Compliance and Regulation

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) is the Australian Government agency responsible for regulating therapeutic goods. Products are assessed for safety, efficacy and quality and are included in the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG) for a specific intended use.

A product registered as a hospital-grade disinfectant, for example, is not automatically authorised for use as a medical device disinfectant. Products should therefore only be used for the purpose and applications for which they are TGA-approved, to comply with the TGA.

ADA Guidelines

The Australian Dental Association (ADA) provides practical guidelines to help dental practices implement TGA requirements and national infection control standards.

What an auditor should be able to see

the practiceshould show.

The practice should be able to demonstrate:

Auditor checklist

  • Current product IFU
  • Current equipment manufacturer's reprocessing instructions
  • Documented cleaning/disinfection procedure or SOP
  • Staff training/competency records
  • Appropriate segregation of clean and contaminated activities
  • Appropriate storage of reprocessed equipment
  • Risk assessment and monitoring of the reprocessing process
  • Evidence that appropriate corrective action is taken when a process does not meet requirements
  • Relevant records and documentation are maintained and traceable

Product regulatory status

made to a
regulated standard.

Alpro Medical manufactures under EN ISO 13485:2016 and MDR 2017/745 (CE-marked in Europe). In Australia, Biodegree is the exclusive supplier of the ALPRO range. ARTG-listed products below link to the Therapeutic Goods Administration public record.

Research behind the products

Products without an ARTG entry (for example intended purposes excluded from TGA registration, or AUST L listings) are omitted from this register. Biodegree supports compliance; it does not certify practice compliance.

The specific mapping of AS 5369 clauses to your surgery, and any certification claim, must be confirmed with Biodegree and your compliance adviser before it is relied on. This page frames how the product library and practical guides support audit readiness; it is not a certification.

Where a water-quality figure is cited (for example a ≤200 CFU/mL target), it is the published benchmark of the referenced body, not an Australian regulatory limit — confirm the applicable target with your compliance adviser before relying on it.
